Team Spotlight: Komal

ree

Today, you will get a chance to learn more about Komal Kaur, our Junior Operations Specialist/ Data Analyst and her role at our company!

What is your role at the company, and what are your key responsibilities?

I’m an Operations and Data Analyst. My work spans analytics, automation, and strategic planning, from analyzing metrics and building dashboards to exploring cybersecurity tools and supporting BCP initiatives. I work across a variety of platforms, including Grafana, SQL, Excel, Power BI, and Azure, and I’ve been building secure workflows for API integrations like ConnectWise Automate. I also support compliance efforts for Trustmark accreditation by learning tools like Lighthouse and Purview. Whether it’s drafting policies, designing automated reporting systems, or diving into new technologies, I enjoy growing into responsibilities that challenge and inspire me.

How long have you been working in your current position, and what led you to this role?

I joined the company three months ago, and it’s been a rewarding journey so far. My background in computer science and psychology, along with early experience at a startup, gave me exposure to project management, development, and data analytics. I was drawn to this role by the opportunity to grow my skills in cybersecurity, operations, and technical automation, and the culture here really resonated with me. I connected with the mindset of continuous improvement and learning, which made this a natural fit.

Can you describe a typical day in your job?

My days tend to shift between structure and exploration. The first half of the month is usually focused on operations and finance reporting, which follows a steady rhythm. Once that’s complete, I dive into more dynamic work, whether it’s automating data flows, designing Power BI architecture, or exploring new tools like Azure, Lighthouse, and Purview. I also spend time on BCP planning, drafting policies, and collaborating with leadership to align on secure, efficient workflows. Every day brings something new to learn, and that’s what I enjoy most.

What projects or accomplishments are you most proud of in your career?

Since joining the company three months ago, one project I’m especially proud to be working on is ConnectWise Automate API integration with Power BI and Azure. It’s still in the early stages, but I’ve successfully researched and designed a secure workflow for token refresh, which will support future automation. I’m proud of the foundation that’s been laid and excited to see how it evolves into a fully automated, secure reporting solution. I love creative, technical work like this, where I get to design, plan, and build something meaningful from the ground up.

How do you collaborate with other team members to achieve your goals?

Collaboration is a big part of how I work. Whether I’m aligning with operations on BCP planning, discussing reporting needs with finance, or brainstorming technical workflows with leadership, I always try to approach teamwork with curiosity and clarity. I enjoy sharing ideas, asking questions, and making sure the solutions I build are useful and secure for the people who will be using them.

What are some recent developments or innovations in your field that you find exciting?

I’m really excited about how AI and automation are transforming the way we work with data. Tools like Azure Functions, Power BI, and Key Vault are evolving quickly, making it easier to build secure, scalable workflows. I’ve also been exploring cybersecurity platforms like Lighthouse and Purview, which offer new ways to manage data governance and privacy. Across the industry, there’s a big shift toward real-time analytics, AI-assisted data management, and autonomous security operations—all of which open exciting possibilities for smarter, faster decision-making.

What’s your number 1 tech tip (that you personally use) to our audience? E.g. A tool you use, a workflow, etc.

Be open to using AI tools but learn how to use them effectively. AI can be incredibly helpful for research, troubleshooting, and getting started—especially when you're still building experience. I use it to explore new concepts and solve problems without interrupting others, which helps me learn independently while still collaborating with leadership. That said, it’s important to understand how AI works, be aware of things like hallucinations, and always approach responses with a critical eye. My top tip: learn how to prompt AI well—clear, contextual prompts make all the difference in getting useful answers.

Now let's learn more about Komal's personal life!

What's your favourite way to unwind after a long day at work?

I love being outdoors, going for a walk, getting fresh air, or heading to the park to play volleyball when the season’s right. In spring and summer, I enjoy gardening, and in the colder months, I’ll hit the gym to relax and zone out. I also love saunas, yoga, and biking classes. For me, stepping away from work and into a new environment is the best way to clear my head and recharge.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work that you're passionate about?

I’m really passionate about creative exploration, whether it’s learning about the latest in AI, like OpenAI’s Sora, or diving into hands-on projects like gardening. This year, I grew squash, carrots, peas, and other veggies for the first time, which taught me a lot about growth and patience. I also enjoy drawing, sewing, and occasionally crocheting. At my core, I love to create—whether it’s with tech, nature, or art—and I’m always curious about tools that help bring ideas to life.

Are there any books, movies, or TV shows you've been enjoying lately?

Lately, I’ve been into lighthearted animated shows. They’re a fun way to unwind without needing to focus too much. I used to watch anime growing up and recently got back into it. I’m also looking forward to new seasons of shows like Severance, Silo, and From on Apple TV. In terms of reading, I’ve been more into journaling lately, but one book I always go back to is Atomic Habits. It’s a great reminder that small, intentional actions can lead to meaningful change.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I’d love to visit Japan; it’s been a dream destination for me. I’m drawn to its rich history, beautiful architecture, and incredible food (I’m a big fan of sushi and ramen!). I also love anime and appreciate the creativity and innovation that Japan is known for. Beyond that, I’d love to explore places like South Korea, London, and other parts of Europe, but Japan is at the top of my list.

What's your favourite type of cuisine or restaurant, and what dish can you never resist ordering?

I genuinely love food—especially anything spicy or bold in flavour. I’m not a picky eater, so I’m always up for trying something new, but if I had to pick a favourite, it would be Thai cuisine. Drunken noodles are my all-time favourite; they’re rich, spicy, and packed with flavour. I also love earthy dishes and anything with a good balance of heat and texture. Sweet potato tempura rolls are another go-to, especially when I’m craving something comforting.

Can you share a fun or interesting fact about yourself that most people at the company don't know?

Most people don’t know that I’ve moved almost every year of my life. I’ve lived in a lot of different places—including New York City for a long time—and I only moved to Canada two years ago. Because I have a North American accent, people often assume I’m local, but I’m still learning the ins and outs of Canadian culture. Things like bear jokes, hockey references, or even certain everyday expressions sometimes fly over my head—and I’ll have to ask for context. It always surprises people when I say, “Wait, I don’t get that!” but it’s part of the fun of adapting and learning something new.

Do you have any pets? If so, tell us about them!

I do! I have a cat I’ve known since the day she was born. She was part of a litter from a friend’s cat, and I officially adopted her when she was about two and a half months old. She’s been with the family for nearly ten years now, and I absolutely adore her. Since I moved to Canada, she’s stayed back in New York with my family, so technically she’s not with me right now, but she’s still very much part of my life. I’ve always loved cats; their calm, curious nature really resonates with me. I wish I were more of a dog person, but I tend to get nervous around loud or high-energy animals, even though I find them adorable.

What's your go-to music playlist or artist for getting pumped up before a busy day?

It really depends on the kind of morning I’m having. On days when I need to get energized, I’ve been loving Korean pop music. It’s loud, high-energy, and instantly gets my blood pumping. It’s perfect for those moments when I need a boost before diving into work. But on slower mornings, I actually prefer silence. I’ll step outside with a cup of coffee and just take in the quiet. There’s something really grounding about starting the day without noise. It helps me focus and ease into the rhythm of what’s ahead.

Are there any charitable causes or organizations that you're passionate about and support?

While I’m not currently involved with a specific organization, I’m always looking for opportunities to volunteer, especially when it comes to expanding access to education in technology. In the past, I’ve taught coding and robotics in public schools and volunteered with college students to help them build foundational tech skills. I love creating access to knowledge that might otherwise feel out of reach, especially for those who are curious but don’t have the resources or support to get started. For me, it’s about breaking barriers, whether it’s financial, educational, or cultural and helping people feel empowered to explore the world of technology.

What's your favourite quote or piece of advice that you live by?

One of my favourite quotes is: “Comparison is the thief of joy.” In today’s world, where social media and the internet make everything and everyone so visible, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others and feeling like you’re not enough. But I’ve found that it’s often that comparison itself creates a feeling of lack. I try to be mindful of how these platforms are designed to keep us engaged, sometimes at the cost of our mental well-being. Taking breaks from social media and remembering that everyone’s journey is different helps me stay grounded. At one point, people lived without constantly measuring themselves against someone across the globe, and I think there’s something powerful in reclaiming that kind of peace.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it?

If I could have any superpower, it would be teleportation hands down. The idea of blinking and suddenly standing across the world is so fascinating to me. I’d use it to travel everywhere. I’ve always felt that it’s a privilege to explore the earth and experience different cultures, histories, and architecture. There’s so much beauty out there, and I think we learn the most when we step outside our own environment. I’ve always been someone who craves exploration and connections. If I could snap my fingers and be somewhere new, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Lastly, what do you enjoy most about being a part of the company's team?

One of the things I enjoy most is the culture it is incredibly supportive and growth-oriented. I feel like I’m constantly learning and building skills that matter to me, and I’m given the space to explore, make mistakes, and grow from them. What really stands out is how kind and helpful the team is. Even when people are busy, they’ll always do their best to support and guide me. There’s a natural generosity in how everyone shows up, and I’ve never felt alone when facing a challenge. That kind of reliability and kindness makes all the difference, and it’s something I deeply appreciate about being part of this team.

We hope that you enjoyed getting to know Komal. We are so thankful for her!
